Mission

Fundación Julie Zurek de Ardila is a nonprofit organization that seeks to holistically support social growth initiatives for vulnerable communities in Cartagena, through programs focused on achieving integral growth for girls while strengthening their academic performance and assisting in community and family integration.

Vision

Become a sustainable organization dedicated to improving quality of life for Cartagena’s most vulnerable populations through transformation that demonstrates sustainable development in communities.

Why do we invest in women?

1. In Cartagena, 19% of girls ages 10 to 19 are currently pregnant or have been pregnant within the last year..

2. In 2016 there were more than 90 cases of teen pregnancy in La Esperanza Neighborhood, making it one of the top five neighborhoods with the highest teen pregnancy rates in Cartagena’s municipality number 2.

3. According to Colombia’s National Survey for School Dropout Rates, teen pregnancy is the main reason in 50% of dropout cases. This percentage is higher in girls with lower educational levels, especially in ages 10 to 15.

4. When girls increase their school attendance by 10%, a country’s GDP increases an average of 3%.

5. According to UN Women, by overcoming gender gaps in the workplace, the Latin American region can increase its GDP by 14%.

6. Girls with seven or more years of education get married four years later and have two fewer children then the average woman.

7. Countries with female political representation that is greater than 30% are shown to be more inclusive, egalitarian and democratic.

8. According to the International Labor Organization, companies with high levels of female leadership generate 10,1% more annual capital profit in comparison to 7,4% of companies without that leadership
